Understanding the Final Grades calculation with the Final Grading Percentages

A Report Card displays the final grades that are fetched for every marking period based on the gradebook grades. The report may vary depending on the final grading percentages that are set in the configuration setup (Grades > Setup >Configuration).

Let's say we set the final grading percentages in the following ratio.

Quarter 1 = Quarter 1 Gradebook Grades (60%) + Quarter 1 Exam (40%) = 100%

Quarter 2 = Quarter 2 Gradebook Grades (60%) + Quarter 2 Exam (40%) = 100%

Quarter 3 = Quarter 3 Gradebook Grades (60%) + Quarter 3 Exam (40%) = 100%

Quarter 4 = Quarter 4 Gradebook Grades (60%) + Quarter 4 Exam (40%) = 100%

Semester 1 = Quarter 1 (40%) + Quarter 2 (40%)  + Semester 1 Exam (20%) = 100%

Semester 2 = Quarter 3 (40%) + Quarter 4 (40%) + Semester 2 Exam (20%) = 100%

Full Year = Semester 1 (30%) + Semester 2 (30%) + Full Year Exam (40%) = 100%

Now, after the grades are entered in respect with all assignments and the exam in a quarter, the final grades are generated by clicking on the Get Gradebook Grades switch which fetches the total of the Gradebook Grades based on the assignment's total weighted or non-weighted grades method and manually entered Exam percents.

Hence, the grades fetched for the student in Quarter 1 is 86.28%, i.e.

Quarter 1 = 60% of Quarter 1 Gradebook Grades (88.8%) + 40% of Quarter 1 Exam (82.5%)

or, Quarter 1 = 53.28% + 33%

or, Quarter 1 = 86.28%

Similarly, then Quarter 2 final grade is fetched - 87.72%.

Then, to generate semester 1 final grades, change the marking period selection from the Input Final Grades page to Semester 1 and then click on Get Gradebook Grades.

Semester 1 = 40% of Quarter 1 final grades (86.28%) + 40% of Quarter 2 final grades (87.72%) + 20% of Semester 1 Exam (95%)

or, Semester 1 = 34.512% + 35.088% + 19%

or, Semester 1 = 88.60%

 

Similarly, then Quarter 3, 4 & Semester 2 final grades are fetched - 85.04%, 92.48% & 86.61% respectively.

 

Now, Full Year final grades fetched is 88.96%, i.e.

Full Year = 30% of Semester 1 (88.60%) + 30% of Semester 2 (86.61%) + 40% of Full Year Exam (91%)

or, Full Year = 26.58% + 25.983% + 36.4%

or, Full Year = 88.96% 

 

Once all the marking period's final grades are fetched, the report card can be generated all the final grades appear in one place.
